Today is for Reflection: When is enough, enough?

Then Peter said to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?” ~~Matthew 19:27

When is enough, enough?

We are tossing around the idea of getting a new camper. We really have out grown the one we have. We have looked at about four different camper places and looked at many, many campers on-line. We started with the idea of just wanting what we have now except for adding bunks. You know what has happened? When you start walking in new campers; seeing the nice interior, extra storage, more space and lots of extra’s that we never even considered, makes it easy to picture camping trips with a much bigger and nicer camper.

for they all out of their [a]surplus put into the [b]offering; but she out of her poverty put in all [c]that she had (A)to live on.”~~~Luke 21:4

Though I am talking about campers, it could be anything; t.v., cars, house, hobbies, clothes, jewelry, books, etc. When is enough, enough? When do we stop and say I really don’t need that or I don’t need to spend money on another one of these, a bigger one of those, or two of that. When do we say I just shouldn’t spend money on any of this or any more of that because so many people in the world are lost, hungry, naked, sick, hurting, lonely and homeless.

Now this I say, (A)he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows [a]bountifully will also reap [b]bountifully.~~~2 Corinthians 9:6

When as I said before so many people in the world are lost, hungry, naked, sick, hurting, lonely and homeless; does God really mind or even want us to have big or even average houses FULL of stuff, garages and basements FULL of all kinds of vehicles, and assorted stuff, hobbies that take a lot of money and time, expensive phones to carry around with us everywhere, computers that we can carry everywhere, access to internet at all times and access to hundreds and hundreds of channels for shows and movies, etc. Would he be more pleased if we spent more time and resources to feed, clothe, comfort, encourage, present the word, pray for, and house people near and far from us?

And He was saying to them all, “(A)If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. ~~~Luke 9:23

Were we really created to have a life where we spend so much time, energy and money satisfying this flesh He gave us? Did God create people smart enough to come up with technology just so we can have fun with it, make life more convenient or so more people can be presented with His truth?

just as I also (A)please all men in all things, (B)not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, (C)so that they may be saved. ~~~1 Corinthians 10:33

At this point I do not know what will end up happening about us purchasing a camper but I do know that God himself is stirring me to ponder all of this for a reason. We may still get a new, nicer camper and that may be o.k.. My prayer is that  my husband and I truly listen to HIM in this area and IN EVERY AREA of our lives and that we walk in obedience to HIM no matter what.

But (I)whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss [a]in view of the surpassing value of [b](J)knowing (K)Christ Jesus my Lord, [c]for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,~~~Philippians 3:7,8

Each one of God’s children have to be willing to seek God, ask Him…………..When is enough, enough, then listen for His answer and follow him no matter how it might affect our flesh!!

I can totally relate. When we went to Disney this year, I looked around and thought about the luxury that we take for granted. “You can buy 1 toy.” Yet, the price of that one toy (let alone the food, the tickets, the gas to get there, the hotel…. everything else) would feed so many people who are so desperate for fresh water or food or clothing or safety. Had the same thought when we went to White Water yesterday. We take so much for granted and the season passes we purchased (even though my Mom and Dad paid for the kids passes) were such an extravagant purchase compared to the fact that so many people just want their basic daily needs met. Not certain where God is taking me on this mental exercise, but definitely realizing the excess in our lives and how much He has blessed us with.

Thank you Donna for sharing your thoughts with me. As you are I am also just trying to listen and be obedient to the Lord.
