Plan for Next School Year

Here is our plan for 1st grade: (Some books are subject to change)

Copy work –Rotate using selections from the different subjects
but mostly use scripture (1 sentence at the most)
Phonics –Just continue as before and have him practice reading daily
Math-Just continue as before still using more “hands on” Math
Foreign language-Continue the “Easy Spanish” Curriculum

Art-Different forms of Drawing, Painting and Clay work
Timeline and Maps –Use along side all readings (History, Geography, literature, etc..)
Handicrafts/life skills-Woodwork, Survival Skills,
Very basic hand sewing, baking, cooking and leather work
Music Appreciation, including folksongs and hymns
Hymns: Amazing Grace, It is Well and All Creatures of our God
and King (New Amazing Grace CD)
**We will also continue to daily sing Children’s Hymn’s**
Folk Songs: Skip to My Lou, This Old Man, John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt
(From the Toddler Sing Along CD)
Nature Study: Mammals, Birds, Trees (?) and Wildflowers
An artist and a composer each term
Artist: John Audubon, Monet and Biblical Art by Rembrandt
Composer: Bach, Liszt and Handel
Computer: Just allow time to explore, play and get to know the Computer
Read in Chronological Order, Use Time-line, Maps, Wall-Chart, Pictures:
Photographs, Drawings, Paintings, etc. and Narration
Also read one Chapter from Psalms or Proverbs two-three days a week

Trial and Triumph (Church History)
An Island Story by H.E. Marshall, chapters 1-21
* ** Fifty Famous Stories Retold by James Baldwin
** *** Viking Tales by Jennie Hall
(hero stories and myths of Norway) Part 1, chapters 1-11

AMERICAN HISTORY (General Book/ Biographies)
The Book: American Stories you never read in School but Should Have. (1 Chap a week)
Read 1-2 Bio’s such as:
Benjamin Franklin by Ingri D’Aulaire
George Washington by Ingri D’Aulaire
Buffalo Bill by Ingri D’Aulaire
Pocahontas by Ingri D’Aulaire

Paddle to the Sea by Holling C. Holling
V.O.M. Book: Window of the World- Focus on one country
a week for discussion (cultural, geographical, etc..) and prayer.

Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock
James Herriot’s Stories by James Herriot
The Burgess Bird Book for Children by Thornton Burgess
** Go on Nature Walks and keep a Nature Journal/Scrapbook**

Taekwondo Lessons
Free play
Playing baseball, basketball, flag football, golf, etc in the back yard
Going on Nature Walks
When it is raining or really, really cold we will exercise inside to music
Cover: Food Groups, What your body needs to be healthy,
Our Five senses, Hygiene, etc..
